I was standing knee-deep in the ocean to capture this photograph, my view camera on its tripod also “knee-deep” in the surf. Waves splashed up against our legs as I spent about 20 minutes setting up, focusing, and making the shot. We were well soaked, but sometimes getting a good photo means sticking your neck out there.
Here, I wanted the feeling of being in the water, looking back at the line of buildings on the cliff’s edge. A red filter on the lens turned the sand a deep, dark tone—almost dystopian, echoing the atmosphere the world felt in 2020 and beyond.
Photographed using a Wisner 4×5 view camera.
