Camera- if you are unfamiliar with the principles of photography, don’t worry, this is as simple as it gets. Everything here is controlled by my hand. Even the click of the shutter is not fully automated. This makes for such a simple device that it is easy to maintain and easy to build (if you are up to it).

That being said when the lens is held in the open position, it casts an image on the glass on the back, this allows for composition and focusing. No different that any other camera. Even your phone or mirrorless slr. What is different is you get to see the raw light cast on the glass. This means it is both upside down and in reverse orientation.
